Ok what's interesting here is that if the unit's buzzer is ticking every detection, it means that the CPU has seen the pulse going into INT0/PD2 pin on the IC. As the CPU controls the buzzer. But it is not counting!
If PD2 pin had died due to excess voltage getting in by accident, then there would be no ticking from the buzzer.
That's got me scratching my head. Can you confirm that the buzzer is ticking every detection and that the display reads 0?

Both the buzzer and LED1 sound/flash with each detection.

LCD has ceased working too so perhaps it's the CPU.

Could be the CPU is locked up for some reason. You can reprogram it to try to get it working again. Contact RH for the binary image? Or get a new one sent?
Double check 5V going to display - make sure you haven't got a partial supply failure.

The kit is 5V device. Are you sure you are using 5V logic level system to get data from the kit? Maybe you are using 3.3V logic level?
