One of the jobs i the lab I worked in was testing disinfectants. We found, if I remember correctly that for ethanol, the most appropriate dilution was 70%, it differed for other alcohols, but pure alcohol was not much better than water for many organisms. Many disinfectants do not work well at low temperatures, I remember doing tests in a cold store at 0C. During part of that time there was a major foot-and-mouth outbreak (1967). We had Lysol soaked mats across entrances to the lab, and you either drove or walked over them. Unless we were on official duty we were not allowed on farms. In one case my boss and I visited a farm to do a foot and mouth inspection when we were threatened by the farmer with a shotgun, we had to go back with a police escort, as under the Animal Health Act we had an absolute right. The farmer wanted us to strip off and bath in Lysol!

The last one is a particularly good answer to a lot of the myths from real experts, not the self-proclaimed social media ones.

Some good info there FSM19, thank you. I found the 2nd link (CDC article) particularly informative. Many people have said that 70% alcohol is the most appropriate dilution but I hadn't found any valid reasons as to why but the CDC article describes it nicely. I think I will go with a 70% dilution on my next batch.

The OxyAction spray was definitely strong enough, ha. I used it and left it unrinsed to get a gauge on the strength of it. My hands were sore after about 25 minutes.
Needs to have a water rinse spray with it.

Also the price on IPA has just skyrocketed. £50-70 for 5L on ebay.
Alternatives need to be found.

Ethanol fuel?

Lol, you're nuts! What is the actual product you are using? Have you read the MSDS for it? I searched for OxyAction but found multiple products from whitening washing powder to toilet cleaner!

I have seen the prices. When I challenged a seller on Ebay, this was their response:

I kept the price down until my IBC had dripped it last drop, I wish I could show you my new price for the iso you wouldn’t believe me. My price has tripled since last Wednesday, I tried to hold off buying the product because I’m actually stocktaking in two weeks I was told today that if I didn’t buy it will be going up again on Monday , which it already has by the 3 suppliers that I use. The suppliers clearly have the stocks in the uk and they are the ones dictating this at the moment and there is nothing I can do about it. I also use the product in other things we manufacture, ie screenwash, traffic film removers etc and these too have now had a threefold price increase again nothing I can do I’m being held to ransom just like the rest of the country, so I do appreciate your comments but they are directed at the wrong person I’m afraid, I’m in the same boat as you, I am also a fairly small business compared to the big boys and have been selling this product for years at the actual market price and when all this madness dies down from overexagerated hype I’m hoping so does the price!

As a replacement.... Ethanol (pure) is going the same way as IPA re price. Seems anything suitable is going up in price. One thing sprung to mind though. However the procedure is quite dangerous if the right steps aren't taken, and that is to distill denatured alcohol (meths). I have enough IPA to use as sanitizer, I also have enough for work, I doubt I have enough for both. In all honesty I'm wondering why we should bother in the UK. If BoJo the Clown wants a herd of infected people then the best way would be to not clean your hands! Remember, once you have the virus and get over it, there is little chance of both catching it again, or passing it on. Maybe best to just get it, and get over it. Sadly though this attitude does not help the elderley and sick with regards to COVID-19.

Dave over at EEV Blog explains how the hand sanitizer works against viruses (skip to 2:26)

I have ordered 2l of glycerine so will have a go at adding some to my sanitizer and see if that makes any difference.
