Nukes on the map? was created by Simomax
Would it be possible to add nuclear power stations, waste sites and other potentially radioactive sites? I think this would be a great way to see where any potential disasters may be before they are actually publicised as i have known things to take days if not weeks before they are reported to the public.

I'm guessing the main challenge would be gathering the data then adding to the map? I don't know what would be involved in adding to the map once the data is gathered but if it is a trivial task I would be more than willing to gather data for the UK.

Cheers,
Simon. :)

I would also volunteer time to compile data for such an improvement. It would make Radmon the best freely accessible site in the world (actually it already is, but it would be even better). Would it be possible to import data from, say a csv file with LAT/LONG and a text tag?

I agree, this will be perfect.

Since we have only 2 nuclear power palnts in our country ,here they are :

48.49377, 17.67906 - Jaslovske Bohunice (there was a major accident in 1977) , I live about 18km from there and I worked there 15 years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bohunice_Nuclear_Power_Plant
48.26340, 18.45613 - Mochovce (this one is in process being built) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mochovce_Nuclear_Power_Plant

Yes this would be very possible and CSV would work fine.
Send me a CSV file formatted how you see fit with an initial list of sites, decimal format coordinates and descriptions (maybe even a few columns for an image thumbnail and wiki link?) Put just a few in to get the ball rolling, then I'll work out a way those interested can update the list. (ftp?)
Thank you.

Brilliant! :cheer:

After a very quick think, I reckon the main fields we need are as follows:
latitude, longtitude, type, name, description, link (wiki/company page)

So for example:
54.029209, -2.916181, Nuclear Power Station, Heysham Power Station, EDF site hosting Heysham 1 & 2 advanced gas-cooled nuclear reactors, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heysham_nuclear_power_station
53.777521, -2.815103, Nuclear Fuel Production, Springfields, Westinghouse nuclear fuel production installation producing nuclear reactor fuel including MOX, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfields

Is this OK for a start? Anyone have any other ideas? I'll start collating a list now for the UK using this format but I can easily change it if necessary.

Cheers!

mw0uzo, I just sent a csv format file derived from the Wikipedeia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_power_stations . It does not include individual http links, but the names should be easily copy-able from the map into the viewer's browser, which would allow their default Wikipedia language to be used. It includes sites greater than 1 GW output. Compiling a list of smaller sites would take a fair bit more work (but I'll do it for Canada!).

Update: DExUS, I just noticed that this Wikipedia page actually had your local Bohunice reactor incorrectly classified as "shut down". It's 2 operational units were upgraded to 505 MW each, crossing the threshold of 1 GW operating, qualifying for the "in service" table. I edited the Wikipedia page so it's now correct, but the csv file I sent is not.

Further update: I was mistaken on the Wikipedia edit; the upgraded output was GROSS capacity not NET capacity, so my edits had to be undone. But of course it's operational, and there are a good many others under 1 GW net that should be shown on the map. Too bad the more comprehensive list at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_nuclear_reactors does not have LAT/LONG coordinates.

Last Update (hey, I'm on vacation today): It may not be so bad; each site linked from the comprehensive list above has the required coordinates. It could be compiled in a couple of hours.
