Or a news story to paint the Russians in a bad light! We have seen that lately as well so I don't give the military presence story much credence. The story I saw indicated that most of the spikes were a few weeks ago. As I recall the half life of 131 is not that long (8 days) and anything detected a few weeks ago would essentially be background radiation at this point.

I think the point of all this is that this is a real release of man-made iodine-131, and it's in the interest of international, and especially, European safety, to find out the source and to stop it happening again.

PersonallyI don't care who gets involved if it means the source is found and properly dealt with so this doesn't happen again, and possibly on a more catastrophic level than this "small" release.
