Just another alternative, but I've had wonderful luck replacing obsolete higher voltage batteries for a variety of devices with [as many rechargeable lithium batteries as I can fit in the space] + a tiny voltage booster board. Inexpensive, adjustable buck-boost and DC-DC boost boards can go up to 90v or higher.

That's a really good idea! Thanks Radslug. Not unsimilar to the old vibrator inverters some counters used back in the days.
