Raysid software

Anyone own a Raysid who is using software other than Android-based? I'm interested in aquiring one but I do not have any device that runs Android - only iOS or PC software. Seems a mistake to have only one platform to interface with it.

To answer my own query there doesn't appear to be any alternative to Android at this time. There was some discussion about an iOS app but nothing came out of it. I emailed Raysid with the same question a week ago and did not receive a reply. I think this is short-sighted of the manufacturer if they want to expand into this niche market. I think the Raysid (<7% top range model) is probably the better hardware compared to the Radiacode 103-G but lack of software support rather kills it (for me). I'm also looking at the GammaSpectacular kits which are better instruments for bench use but are not very portable for rockhounding use. Also significantly more expensive (I guess rightly so for what they offer).

Edit: Just one hour after posting this I received a reply from Raysid - Yes, today we have only an Android app. Till the end of the year I have to make an iOS app with basic functionality.

So it seems an iOS app is actually in the works but I doubt I will wait a year on the strength of that.

The same could be said of the Radiacode at first. It was only a year or so ago they finally released the iOS app for the Radiacode. Before that it was just Android or PC. At first the PC app was pants, but it really has come on in leaps and bounds, same for the Android app, but I don't have iOS, so can't say about that. That's a thing I like about the Radiacode, they are constantly working on and bettering the software.

The Raysid seems a good contender with it's 5x5x5cm CsI/Tl scintillation crystal. It's a bit too pricey for me though right now. I don't know if I would use this kind of scintillator for rockhounding though. A good pancake GM tube might be a better option for that, as the scintillators are generally blind to beta and alpha, and I wouldn't want to leave a scintillator out in the wild for 2 days to get a spectrum! I'd dig up the source and take it home instead!

There may be an issue with the Raysid in that it's not a large company with lots of resource to throw into software development. I think Radiacode is better equipped to do that. For that reason I'm not expecting to see rapid developments in this area.

I've watched many vids where the Raysid is used (taped to a long stick) to locate general areas of activity due to its high sensitivity, then activity is further localised with a radiacode and with a bit of digging the source is found. The combination is about as good as you could need. A radiacode alone is probably good enough to get started. Neither of these devices substitute well for a decent gamma spec with a 2"x2" detector like those offered by GammaSpectacular but that costs serious money (serious to me anyway).
